Local Customs

Traditions are shown by their local customs. In a continuously changing world ceremonies, which are often based in religious, liturgical, or seasonal festivities, strengthen people’s sense of community. Claudia Wimmer’s striking images focus on celebrations from all over the world. Her series Local Customs shows people silhouetted against a semi-abstract background – impersonal characters, as a local custom will be passed on from one generation to the next.
In Kazakhstan, a newborn is welcomed into the world through the Kalzha ritual with gifts and dancing by the women and children and in Switzerland the end of the summer is celebrated through the “Almabtrieb”, the ceremonial driving down of their richly adorned cows from mountain pastures, with the sound of the cowbells echoing through the valleys.

The implements are depicted realistically with golden accentuation of the festive spirit.
