Is globalisation making us all the same? And do we therefore all have the same likes and dislikes?
Nothing proves more effectively that this isn’t the case than our morning breakfast ritual. Later in the day, we are more willing to try out the new, the unusual and even exotic – but this first meal of the day is one of the things we are reluctant to compromise about, and each and every one of us prefers the breakfast food we are accustomed to from our personal cultural background. The sole common feature is the newspaper, reflecting the moment of a day that is as fleeting as the breakfast meal itself. Nevertheless, all the pieces together create a strangely timeless effect.
